GLP-1s + making every bite count

5 min read

If you're on a GLP-1, you already know the strange part: appetite mostly disappears. Which sounds like the answer to everything, until you realize you're now eating a fraction of what you used to — and every one of those smaller meals has to work a lot harder for you.

Why every bite matters more now

When you're eating less overall, there's no room left for empty calories. A GLP-1 doesn't discriminate between the protein that's protecting your muscle and the crackers that are just filling space — it just suppresses hunger for both. So if those precious few bites of the day go to something low in protein or nutrients, your body doesn't get a second chance to make up for it later. Every meal needs to be doing real work: protein first, always, because muscle loss is one of the most under-discussed risks of rapid appetite suppression. Add in something with fiber and healthy fat to round it out, and you've covered a lot of ground in a small amount of food.

The middle-of-the-night crash

This one catches a lot of women off guard. You eat so little during the day that by 2 or 3am, blood sugar drops low enough to wake you up — heart racing, sweaty, sometimes shaky, sometimes just wide awake for no clear reason. It's not anxiety and it's not random. It's often your body running out of fuel because the day's intake was too small or too carb-light without enough protein or fat to hold steady through the night.

This is exactly why we made our electrolyte protein refresher — a salted, high-protein yogurt built to hand your body two things at once: real protein to protect muscle and real electrolytes to support hydration, in one easy bite that doesn't ask much of an appetite that's already running low.

A few ways to head off the crash:

  • Make sure your last meal or snack of the day includes real protein + fat, not just something light or sweet
  • Don't let appetite suppression talk you out of eating something before bed if it's been hours since your last meal
  • A small protein-forward snack [a hard-boiled egg, a little cottage cheese, or our electrolyte protein refresher] before sleep can be the difference between a full night and a 3am wake-up
  • If it keeps happening, it's worth flagging to whoever's managing your prescription — dosing and timing can sometimes be adjusted

Less margin for error

GLP-1s can be a genuinely useful tool, but they change the rules of eating. Less food means less margin for error, so what you do eat has to count — for your muscle, for your blood sugar and for actually getting through the night asleep.
