Gentle movement

4 min read

Muscle retention doesn't require a gym membership or a training split built for someone else's body. For a lot of women — especially anyone managing joint issues, connective tissue concerns or simply a body that's changing — the most sustainable movement is the gentle, consistent kind, not the intense kind.

Why gentle works

Muscle responds to consistent, moderate resistance over time far more than it responds to occasional intense effort. And as covered in Not built for a gym bro, hard training can actually raise cortisol enough to work against you if your body's already managing insulin resistance or hormonal flux. Gentle, frequent movement tends to support muscle without adding that extra stress load.

Ways to build this in without a gym

  • A weighted vest on a daily walk — low-impact, adds resistance without joint strain, easy to build into a routine you already have
  • Isometric holds — wall sits, planks held for time, holding a squat position; real muscle engagement without needing equipment or a lot of range of motion
  • Bodyweight basics done slowly — sit-to-stands from a chair, wall push-ups, gentle step-ups
  • Walking itself — genuinely underrated for both muscle and insulin sensitivity; a 10–15 minute walk after a meal in particular helps blunt the blood sugar response

The permission piece

You don't need to earn rest, and you don't need to push through pain to make movement count. If your body has connective tissue issues, joint instability or any condition that makes standard resistance training risky, gentle + consistent will always beat intense + occasional. Muscle built slowly is still muscle.
